Mathemagical — Haas Brothers

Boesky Gallery presents Mathemagical, an exhibition of new sculptures and paintings by Los Angeles–based artists the Haas Brothers (b. 1984; Santa Monica, CA)—twins Nikolai and Simon. Their fourth solo with the gallery, it coincides with Uncanny Valley, their traveling mid-career museum survey (Cranbrook Art Museum; next at the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin).

Through a rigorous, innovative approach to materials, the Haas Brothers illuminate patterns of emergence that govern the natural world. Beginning with relatively simple forms, they subject them to defined processes—paint, clay, wax, or beads according to a precise algorithm—yielding complex, emergent patterns. With Mathemagical, they present their most ambitious systematized works to date: Accretion paintings that start from nostalgic landscapes and build according to a reaction-diffusion equation; bronze Beasts with fur-like wax-built surfaces; and The Peach Tree, the largest work, with carved stone base, bronze trunk, algorithmic Venetian glass bead foliage by the Haas Sisters of Lost Hills, and illuminated blown-glass peaches.
