Double Vision — Maia Ruth Lee

Tina Kim Gallery presents Double Vision, Maia Ruth Lee’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Taking its title from Homi K. Bhabha’s The Location of Culture, the show treats migration as simultaneous perception — inhabiting both the place left behind and the place occupied — and works memory as material. Across both gallery spaces forms stack, unfold, mirror and reassemble, building identity as continuous accumulation rather than a fixed point of origin.

Anchoring the exhibition is a series of new paintings from Lee’s Bondage Baggage methodology, where luggage becomes a vessel for memory, absence and aspiration. New sculptures in latex preserve the imprint of a bound bundle after its contents are released, video stills of the artist’s family are sewn onto the colossal form of the 이민가방, and a newly commissioned video installation draws on home footage recorded by her parents in Nepal and Korea.

Lee also revisits her 2019 steel glyphs, assembled from salvaged New York architectural fragments and occupying the space between word and sculpture — an open-ended code that stays vaguely familiar yet stubbornly illegible.
