MoMA PS1
Artist-centered and community-driven, MoMA PS1 embraces boundary-breaking ideas and experimental practices. Founded by Alanna Heiss in 1976 as P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in a converted Romanesque Revival public schoolhouse in Long Island City, it affiliated with MoMA in 2000 and has offered insight into artists' worldviews for nearly 50 years. Its idiosyncratic classrooms-turned-galleries host risk-taking exhibitions and permanent installations by James Turrell and Pipilotti Rist, while the courtyard's Warm Up summer music series — running since 1998 — connects the institution to experimental music and club culture.
