Artists Space
Artists Space is a nonprofit gallery founded in SoHo in 1972 as one of New York's first alternative spaces, created to support artists outside the commercial system. It gave early exhibitions to Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, and the Pictures Generation — the landmark 1977 'Pictures' show was staged here — and has remained a testing ground for new practices and urgent discourse for five decades. Now located at 11 Cortlandt Alley in Tribeca, it pairs exhibitions with performances, screenings, and its arts-education program in New York City public schools.
