Tradition Renewed: Contemporary Literati Masters

As part of Alisan Fine Arts' 45th anniversary programme, "Then and Now", Tradition Renewed celebrates four contemporary literati masters from mainland China whose practices have played a pivotal role in the evolution of contemporary ink painting since the 1980s. Featuring Chen Jialing, Jiang Baolin, Lu Fusheng, and Peng Xiancheng, the exhibition highlights artists who have redefined the possibilities of the literati tradition as modern-day painter-scholars.

The exhibition reflects Alisan's longstanding commitment to introduce contemporary Chinese art from the mainland to international audiences, including early landmark shows such as A State of Transition (1987), Modern Chinese Paintings (1989), and Landscapes, Figures, Flowers & Birds (1990).

From Chen Jialing's contemporary bird-and-flower paintings and Jiang Baolin's line-drawing mountainscapes, to Lu Fusheng's highly individual landscapes and Peng Xiancheng's evocative Tang dynasty figures and horses, the exhibition traces the diverse paths through which these artists have renewed and expanded the language of Chinese painting. It forms the historical counterpart to Revisiting the Jade Terrace at Alisan Atelier.
