TERRITORIES — Fernando Mastrangelo

Cristina Grajales Gallery presents Territories, a solo exhibition by Fernando Mastrangelo exploring land, ownership and belonging through the lens of disputed regions. The show marks an evolution in his practice, fusing his signature material language with a pointed engagement with geopolitics.

Long known for landscape-driven work about climate and environmental fragility, Mastrangelo turns to regions shaped by contested histories and shifting borders — an investigation begun when the US announced plans to acquire Greenland, in part to control its rare earth reserves. The resulting landscape works are at once serene and charged: quietly majestic scenes carrying the weight of ongoing conflict.

The work resists pointing at any one place. By drawing on the shared topography — mountainous, vast, imposing — that unites these regions, Mastrangelo creates what he calls a visual equalizer: one terrain blurs into the next, leaving the viewer untethered from any identifiable location and moving instead through a collective landscape shaped by dispute, memory and projection.
