Ojo de Agua — Hugo Toro

Perrotin New York is pleased to present Ojo de Agua, the gallery’s first exhibition with Franco-Mexican artist Hugo Toro and the artist’s first presentation in the United States. Toro navigates the space between reality and imagination, painting landscapes that reveal stories that have shaped his identity, whether from his own life or his ancestral lineage. Across this new body of work, water appears as the main source of inspiration, painted in melancholic shades that reflect the element itself and its ability to reflect light, memory, and emotion.

About the artist

Hugo Toro has a multidisciplinary background, with an internationally recognized career as an architect and interior designer. Through his artistic training, he has now embarked on a new phase, establishing himself as a painter and visual artist.

Born into a bicultural environment, Toro never lived in Mexico, yet he remained intimately connected to the country through the stories and memories his mother shared with him. Drawing from these recollections, objects, and narratives, he has built a personal imaginary rooted in Mexico, which shapes his artistic vision. In his paintings, Toro explores a dialogue between his two cultures, French and Mexican, creating universes of stories that speak to all, where the boundaries between reality and imagination are fluid and transgressed.
